What is an Absinthe fountain, and how do I use it?
If you don't know what an Absinthe fountain is, here is a short explanation: Absinthe fountains are the professional accessory to drink Absinthe. You don't necessarily need a fountain, as you can also use an Absinthe water carafe. But if you have one, you don't want to miss this unique drinking accessory. Because with an Absinthe fountain you can prepare the tastiest Absinthe with the best louche. The louche is the opalescent effect when the water mixes with the Green Fairy. Green Absinthe turns magically into a white elixir.
In the video further down the site, you can see, how you prepare Absinthe using an Absinthe fountain. As you see, you don't fill the glass dispenser with the Green Fairy, you fill it with ice cubes and water. Then, when the water is cooled down, you use the spouts to prepare your glass of Absinthe. You open them carefully and through the spouts water drops start to drip on the sugar cube on the Absinthe spoon. Slowly the sugar cubes dissolves and the glass is filled with water. Be sure that only a tiny beam of water or better only water drops float out of the fountain. Because only then the sugar will get completely dissolved.
Besides its unique design, the special feature of an Absinthe fountain is, that you will get the nicest louche as initially mentioned. Why? Because you can easily regulate the amount of water that drips out of the Absinthe fountain. This means you can extend the ritual and the slower Absinthe and water mix, the better is the louche effect.
Metal Absinthe Fountains: Can I still buy them?
Vintage Absinthe fountains of the Belle Époque era were made of metal. The one you can see in the picture is the Triple A fountain (AAA) made by ALANDIA. It is inspired by an antique original: The Terminus fountain. Terminus was an Absinthe manufacturer during the times of the Belle Époque and their antique fountain was decorated with a French rooster on the lid. The classic Absinthe fountain has this legendary decoration as well, as you can see in the picture next to this text. The fountain itself is of highest quality with many intelligent details, that make its use a truly unique experience. We will list a few, so that you can understand why it is of superior quality:
> The glass bowl is made from molded glass, which gives the bowl the necessary strength to make it resistant against temperature fluctuations.
> Precisely machined thread-mounts guarantee a smooth and easy assembly of the individual components.
> The base is cushioned with a foam pad to prevent slippage and scratches on the table.
> All of the fountain's parts are polished to let it shine like the Belle Époque itself!
But, and this is the sad part of the story, the AAA fountain is not available for sale anymore :-( Unfortunately, the production costs had risen immeasurably, so we had to stop production. It is sad but true.
Should I buy other metal Absinthe Fountains like the Lady fountain?
On the market, you can still find other vintage looking metal Absinthe fountains for sale. These reproductions look very similar and sometimes even have a rooster lid. Some of the fountains are also offered with a lady shaped base. This fountain is called the "Lady Absinthe fountain". It is as well available for sale in a Green Fairy version with wings. These metal fountains look nice, but we do not recommend buying them. The quality is very low. These antique looking fountains were exactly the reason why we decided to produce a high quality metal Absinthe fountain. So how do you know what kind of fountain is offered? The metal fountains of minor quality are made in India and often have the following defects: Improperly made threads, leaky faucets, rusting water filters, very fragile glass, which breaks at the slightest stress or temperature difference, etc. Basically, all metal fountains that are offered on the market are the Indian versions. All in all, these fountains are a true disappointment. Do not buy them if you do not want to get frustrated.
We recommend buying a glass fountain instead. These fountains have the advantage that they are smaller and have that very special "crystal look". Or course, they are a modern interpretation of the classic Absinthe fountains, as glass fountains did not exist back in the day. But they work very well, and we really love these fountains for their precise craftsmanship. Our glass fountains are produced in Europe by a glassblower with many years of history. They have perfect quality.
The history of the Absinthe Fountain
Absinthe fountains as an Absinthe accessory can look back on a long history. In the beginning of the 20th century, during the times of the Belle Époque, fountains or in French "Absinthe Fontaines" were a typical bistro equipment. They were placed at a center spot in the café, and you could get your ice-cold water out of this water station. Below, you can see an old picture of Absintheurs enjoying their glass of real Absinthe using a fountain. It is the tower on the table on the right side. Actually, it is the famous Terminus Absinthe fountain, with the rooster on top of the lid. The photography is fascinating, as you can also spot water carafes, Absinthe glasses and spoons.
