Absinthe Prince of Absinthe is a particularly extraordinary Absinthe from SaarWhisky Distillery. This is because it is distilled from the 12 herbs that were used to embalm the body of William Henry Prince of Saarbrücken-Nassau in 1768. The herbs are well documented, as the person responsible for the embalming was the great-great-great-grandmother of the owner of the SaarWhisky Distillery. The following herbs were and are used: Santolina, chamomile, coriander, lavender, privet, laurel, mint, rosemary, sage, wormwood, hornwort and hyssop.
The Absinthe Prince of Absinthe has a very pronounced aroma density, marked by anise, fennel and wormwood notes and complemented in complexity by the other 9 herbs. The Absinthe itself is deep green and has a very nice cloudiness after adding ice-cold water.
Prince William Henry of Saarbrücken-Nassau, born March 6, 1718, died July 24, 1768, after suffering a stroke. He was buried in the castle church on July 29. The official funeral ceremony took place some time later, as the body was first embalmed. When the castle church was repaired in 1842, the funeral monument was moved to another place. On this occasion, the crypt and the coffin of the prince were opened, and his embalmed body was found still preserved.
Another opening of the tomb and coffin was made in 1948 and in 1995. During the last reburial, a detailed archaeological and paleo pathological examination was carried out. During this examination, the good preservation of the corpse was initially noted. However, on one hand, the ring finger was missing. Here, theft was probably committed during a previous opening of the coffin...
