Absinthe and famous personalities is this week’s topic. Because there are many famous personalities that came in contact with Absinthe. Some of these contacts helped the popularity of the Green Fairy, some stigmatized her as being dangerous and poisonous.
Personalities with negative perception of Absinthe
In Britain, Absinthe has never been a drink for most of the population, but rather for the intellectual society. In 1999, when Absinthe sales were seen as something crucial, Tony Blair said that “he is keeping a close eye on the matter and if it becomes popular, he will ban it”. Actually Absinthe was never banned in England, that is as well why some of the first brands after Absinthes legalization in the European Union in 1998 were developed by the British.
Personalities with positive perception of Absinthe
Back in the 2000s when Bill Clinton was President, a picture appeared where his wife Hillary Clinton had a glass of Absinthe standing right in front of her. Whether she drank it or not, nobody knows. However, as she was in Prague, it would have been legal to drink.
In 1998 Absinthe was re-launched in Britain, because it was never really banned (read the full article about Absinthe prohibition here). That was when Johnny Depp was filming his movie Sleepy Hollow. He wanted to get some Absinthe and drink it with a journalist he had previously played in a movie.
Marilyn Manson started to drink Absinthe in 1998. He publicly stated that the Green Fairy was influencing the creation process of 2000s album Holy Wood (In The Shadow of the Valley of Death). The album Golden Age of Grotesque in 2003 was Marilyn Manson’s tribute to art and 19th Century Parisian decadence. Also, his former girlfriend Dita von Teese was associated with the green liquor. She started to promote the spirit in her Burlesque dance performances. In 2007, Manson started to produce his own Absinthe, Mansinthe. The official Absinthe of Marilyn Manson is a high quality brand distilled from grand wormwood, anise, fennel and other fine herbs.
