Absinthe Rouge is a ruby red Absinthe from the French Awen Nature distillery. This small distillery appreciates the versatility of nature and experiments with unique ingredients. The red color of Awen Rouge is naturally derived, but which botanical is used for coloration is kept secret by the distillery (we assume they use hibiscus blossoms..?). The taste of this red Absinthe reflects 9 distilled herbs, in the foreground is anise and wormwood. On the back palate you can detect spicy slightly notes of angelica. Nevertheless, the main motivation to buy this Absinthe is probably its color. We like Absinthe Rouge for being special. The red color louches actually to a fine pink when cold water is added, which is also a nice feature.
Did red Absinthe exist back in the days during the age of the Belle Époque?
Until now no bottle of vintage red Absinthe was found. But this does not mean, that it was not produced! Because there exists actually a historical advertisement featuring "Absinthe Rosinette". The liquid in the glass of the lady shown on the poster is without a doubt red/pink. The producer of Absinthe Rosinette was according to the poster Oxygènée, a well known Absinthe producer of that time. Therefore one can assume that red Absinthe is actually no invention of our present time, it is authentic!
