Description
Mata Hari Absinthe is made in Vienna according to a 125 year old family recipe. But Mata Hari is not classic per se, it has an unconventional taste. Mata Hari Absinthe does not contain anise, contrary to classic Absinthe. The taste is rather characterized by a sweetish, very interesting violet note (similar to the Absinthe "Green Fairy"). The recipe also contains some Christmassy spices like cinnamon and clove. Its green colour is natural, i.e. herbs and seeds are used for colouring. This Absinthe is something special. You just have to try it. Due to its anise-free recipe Mata Hari Absinthe is also suitable as a mixer with Cola or Red Bull. You will see, these drinks are quite powerful, drink responsibly.
Mata Hari Absinthe, who gave the name?
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle MacLeod (*1876; †1917) was a Dutch woman better know by her stage name Mata Hari. In 1903, Margaretha moved to Paris. By 1905, she named herself Mata Hari and began to win fame as an exotic dancer. Mata Hari brought a carefree provocative style to the stage. The most celebrated segment of her act was her progressive shedding of clothing until she wore just a jeweled bra and some ornaments upon her arms and head. During World War I, the Netherlands remained neutral. As a Dutch, Zelle was thus able to cross national borders freely. In January 1917, the German military attaché in Madrid transmitted radio messages to Berlin describing the helpful activities of a German spy code-named H-21. French intelligence agents intercepted the messages and, from the information it contained, identified H-21 as Mata Hari. On 13 February 1917, Mata Hari was arrested in her room at the Hotel Elysée Palace on the Champs Elysées in Paris. She was put on trial on 24 July, accused of spying for Germany, and consequently causing the deaths of at least 50,000 soldiers. She was executed by firing squad on 15 October 1917, at the age of 41...

- Interesting and Worth a Try Review by grantco
Being one of the less expensive absinthes out there, it was available for quite awhile at our local grocery store. It's taste is definitely different but interesting. Little or no anise flavor but still good. And though it seems at times people don't mention enjoying the unique effects of absinthe drinking, this one scores high on those points. Good alcohol content and a definite absinthe "buzz." For years I took for granted its availability here, but they ran out and have yet to get it back in stock. Lucid and Absente have had to take it's place, but I miss it as a unique and refreshing change of pace. (Posted on 5/17/2023)Rating - The First & best I have tried Review by Blondy
I see several folks saying they didn't like this absinthe. I'm sorry I completely disagree. I have at least 10 empty bottles of Mata Hari. I have always done the Czech Fire Ritual, which Alandia discourages. I have turned so many people on to Mata Hari & everyone including me ends up laughing our butts off, no headache, no hangover, no barfing. This is my most favorite absinthe because I tried an anise absinthe & found out how much I hate Anise. So some folks might not like anise-free, but I won't buy anything else. First time I bought it I was by myself & actually thought my ears had caught fire they were so hot! It was hilarious! After that the green fairy bit me right in the butt and I'm always gonna have a bottle in my house. I love the delicate smell and taste. I love how happy I end up feeling after & will always love it. Not the best Absinthe I have ever had. however for the price this bottle was quite the crowd pleaser at my party. no one who tried it had anything bad to say about it. The herbal flavors come across in a way that is not overpowering but still rich. For those who are not as big a fan of the traditional this one is a good option. (Posted on 9/29/2022)Rating
